David Kalākaua ruled the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHawaiian Islands from 1874 until 1891 at a crucial time \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ein Hawai‘i’s history when the Islands were undergoing great changes. There was an alarming \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003einflux of foreigners who brought \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ewith them other cultures and unknown diseases.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv title=\"Page 1\" class=\"page\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"layoutArea\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"column\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eKing Kalākaua saw that the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eonly way to preserve his fast diminishing people was to lead them back to their old traditions. Thus he set about reviving the ancient chants and hula and \u003c\/span\u003ethe Hale Naua (The School of Wisdom). Under the king's patronage there was an enormous resurgence of Hawaiian culture. But his enemies in the missionary party were relentless of prying this innovative king from his throne. The strain\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eof withstanding their attacks \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003etook its toll on Kalākaua. After \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ereigning over his island kingdom for seventeen years, he went to San Francisco to alleviate his failing health in late 1890.
